Smudging is a symbolic exercise found in feng shui practice, many Native American traditions and alternative healing practices. It involves burning selected herbs or other materials in a manner that fills the home or other space with the fragrance of the smoke, and it is thought to clear negative energy.
Smudging can sound a bit intimidating to beginners and may seem unsafe or complicated, but in reality, it is quite easy and completely safe. Here are some reasons to smudge.
#1 NEW HOME, NEW BEGINNINGS
Many believe it is a good idea to do smudging before moving into a new home. This is because you want to release any negative energy the former occupants left behind. It will give you a fresh start in your new home.
#2 AFTER A BAD DAY
Some days are downright unbelievable. And sometimes you can almost feel the negativity sweeping up inside this. This is a good time for smudging as it neutralises the energy within you.
#3 3RD PARTY NEGATIVITY
We are not saying you should not listen to your friend in need and distress. Be a positive person and help your distressed friend as best you can.
Just be aware of the negative energy left behind, it could aversely affect you. You can do a quick fix by smudging the space.
#4 STRESS RELIEF
Burning sage is a great ally against stress.
A 2016 research project for the University of Mississippi established that white sage is rich in compounds that activate certain receptors in the brain. These receptors are responsible for elevating mood levels, reducing stress, and even alleviating pain.
#5 ODOR REMOVAL
For some, this may be the best of all benefits: Sage / Palo Santo is a lovely incense with a divine aroma, pure and simple.
It also works great as a chemical-free air freshener or odor controller.
